 A Brief History of Darts

The origin of the game of darts, has a very long history that dates back at least 700 years! Most historians agree that the game of darts has roots in Archery. The historians also agree that darts was also a military past time of soldiers, who may have often used broken arrows or crossbow bolts thrown at upturned wine barrels. It's safe to say, that throwing pointed objects at stationary targets could date back thousands of years, as early hunters were likely engaged in some form of improving accuracy with hunting spears, blow guns and the like.

As the game grew in popularity amongst the military, it was not uncommon for soldiers to be found playing the game in pubs, over a few pints with friends and fellow enlistees. This gave root to darts becoming one of the most popular and established pub games in England.

Who Invented the Game of  Darts?

The game of darts, as we know it, has been given credit to Lancashire carpenter Brian Gamlin, in 1896. He is credited with designing the numbering system for the wedges on the dart board, as a way to test one's accuracy. This has given birth to countless game types that are still used to this day and accepted worldwide as the standard game formats.
